Middle Eastern Petrochemical Plants Are Targets of Hackers

A recent article in the New York Times, highlights why network managers and software developers are having to take great care in implementing systems.

The worry of course is that as more and more devices become IP aware; they too will become a target for the undesirable elements in computing.

I recently drove past a bus stop with one of the new wi-fi enabled electronic departure time signs; it was in the middle of a reboot that had hung. There plain to see was the IP address of the network, and with just a laptop and some simple open source tools I could have quite happily played with the sign and probably the whole network. A lot more care is required of all these type of devices in the future. How often have you seen the cash point machine at a bank, in a never ending reboot of Windows?
