VSJ – July 2002 – Members’ News

Mike Ryan, the Director General, talks about IAP30, this year’s Annual Symposium to be held at Trinity House Tower Hill, London on Thursday 10th October.

This is the most prestigious event in the IAP calendar, celebrating 30 years that have passed since the Institution was conceived. Our varied and stimulating programme will look back to those earliest days, discuss the big changes that have taken place and identify some key trends for the future. Speakers already committed include Professor Jim Austin of the University of York and Henry Nash, a recent Director of IT at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Jim Austin has an extensive personal collection of historic computers; we hope he will bring some of them along to Trinity House to entertain members during lunch. However, his work today is concerned mainly with Artificial Intelligence and the Brain and that is what he will be talking about.

Henry Nash, a Fellow of the Institution, has built three successful companies, all of which produced groundbreaking IT products. One of them won both the Queen’s Award for Technology and the Queen’s Award for Exports and went public; one was acquired by Novell; the last, capitalised at $40 million, remains in private hands. Henry recently gave up his post as Director of IT Strategy at Credit Suisse First Boston to return to Britain as a venture capitalist and advisor to start-up companies. These are the areas he has promised to illuminate for us.

The growth of the Internet has proved an opportunity for some UK organisations and a threat to others. How can its potential best be harnessed, particularly for marketing and sales? These are the questions that another of our speakers will address. Mike Wetton is a Director of the management consultants Allery Scotts. He will discuss the design of successful web sites, how web-based marketing should dovetail with traditional approaches and how to get the best out of search engines.

Trinity House is a splendid example of Georgian architecture belonging to the Trinity House Corporation, which runs our lighthouses. It is situated opposite the Tower of London and houses a collection of maritime memorabilia now including Britannia’s bell. Quite apart from the professional interest, the Symposium is a good day out – a chance to meet fellow spirits over a good lunch and a few drinks with something interesting to talk about. Numbers are limited; don’t miss this chance.
