VSJ – March 2004 – Sounding Board

Addie van der Kooy, AMIAP has had his career as a Business Analyst interrupted by a serious health problem. He’s now looking to get back into work and wonders if another IAP member could help. I’ll let him tell you about himself.

First of all, let me introduce myself. I am a Dutch national who has been busy making England his home for the last 20 years. I now cut my sandwiches diagonally and pour the milk first in my tea…miracles do happen. I still don’t understand cricket test matches (when are the real matches being played?) but I live in hope. In 1996 I began my career as a Business Analyst and worked for companies such as PetsMart, Sainsbury and T-Mobile.

Unfortunately, 18 months ago my career came to an abrupt halt as a result of a serious back and neck condition. Since then I have not been able to resume work and have been on Incapacity Benefit.

However, I am slowly showing signs of improvement and part of the recovery programme is to try out a few hours of work each week, ideally home-based and self-paced, as a way to gently get back into the swing of work again. I envisage 3 to 4 hours a day, 2 to 3 days a week, doing any kind of administration or simple Business Analysis work. Work on documents (sampling, editing, compiling, etc.), creating diagrams using VISIO, producing spreadsheets and manuals, and performing intelligence research on Internet or via telephone might be examples.

My experience ranges from Process Analysis, Staff Training documentation and Project Co-ordination to Business Requirements Analysis and Impact/Issue Analysis. For two years before my health problems forced me to stop work I was involved at J.Sainsbury Plc in the analysis of business requirements for 24×7 trading for all store formats. At T-Mobile I was responsible for requirements and impact analysis for Roaming projects, such as GPRS and Seamless Roaming. I am also interested in business journalism (e.g. corporate newsletter/bulletins) or PR work, as I come from a journalistic background. Translation (English/Dutch and Dutch/English) is also part of my skills portfolio. I would also consider work as a courier, if geographically feasible (I live in Marlborough, Wiltshire). In principle I am open to any kind of work you may not have time or resources for and which can be mainly done from home (perhaps with the occasional site-visit). If any of this is of use to you, please contact me at the email address or phone numbers below. I look forward to hearing from you.
