VSJ – September 2001 – Members’ News

And the Winner Is:

The Council has made this year’s award for the best contribution to VSJ by an IAP member to… pause for fanfare… David Deeks for his article on PISO in November’s edition. David’s prize is a weekend for two at the Dean Court Hotel in York, with a deluxe room overlooking the Minster. Congratulations, David!

Robin Jones reports on a useful day at Portcullis House…

PITCOM, the Parliamentary IT Committee, organised a ‘Freshers’ Fair’ for new MPs on 26 June. The IAP was delighted to be invited to attend and took the opportunity to raise its profile with politicians of all persuasions. So on a blisteringly hot morning, Mike Ryan (the Director General), Steve Cumbers (the Vice-president) and I found ourselves in the architecturally grand but temperately challenged  – the air conditioning left more than a little to be desired – gleaming new offices of the nation’s law makers. We were installed with IBM, Sun, Cisco, Nortel, BT and others in the Clement Atlee suite and spent the day discussing the IAP’s activities with about fifty Members and Peers, not all of them ‘freshers’. Among our visitors was Andrew Miller, MP for Ellesmere Port & Neston and President of ‘Labour for Computing’, Brian White, MP for North East Milton Keynes and a speaker at the IAP Symposium two years ago, Sir George Young, MP for North West Hampshire and Lord Renwick, the chairman of PITCOM.
