How Can AI Help Us with Climate Change?

Smarter Use of Energy

Artificial intelligence (AI) could become an important tool in tackling climate change by helping us use energy and natural resources more efficiently. AI systems can analyse enormous amounts of data, identify patterns and make predictions that would be difficult for humans to produce alone.

One major application is energy management. AI can predict when electricity demand will rise and help balance the supply from renewable sources such as wind and solar. Smart grids can use these predictions to reduce waste and make better use of clean energy.

Improving Renewable Energy

AI can also help improve the performance of renewable energy systems. For example, machine-learning models can analyse weather patterns to predict how much electricity wind turbines and solar panels are likely to generate.

This information can help energy companies plan ahead and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels when renewable generation falls. AI can also identify potential faults in equipment, allowing repairs to be carried out before expensive breakdowns occur.

Protecting Nature and Reducing Emissions

Beyond energy, AI can help monitor the health of forests, oceans and other ecosystems. Satellites combined with AI can analyse images to detect deforestation, wildfires, changes in land use and other environmental problems.

AI can also make transport more efficient. Intelligent traffic systems can reduce congestion, while AI-powered route planning can help businesses reduce fuel consumption and emissions. In agriculture, AI can help farmers use water, fertiliser and pesticides more precisely, potentially reducing environmental damage.

A Tool, Not a Solution

Despite its potential, AI is not automatically good for the environment. Data centres require significant amounts of electricity and water, and the manufacture of computing equipment also has an environmental cost.

The challenge is therefore to ensure that AI’s benefits outweigh its footprint. Powered by renewable energy and used responsibly, AI could help governments, businesses and communities make better decisions and accelerate the transition towards a lower-carbon future.
