Robots have fascinated film and television audiences for almost a century, reflecting society’s hopes and fears about technology. You may have recently enjoyed Ann Droid on BBC or back in 2015 watched Channel 4’s Humans. Perhaps you loved Robot Wars when amateur and professional teams built robots to battle it out – it was so popular it ran from 1998-2004 and 2016-2018.

Early screen robots were often portrayed as mysterious mechanical servants or dangerous creations. Over time, they evolved into complex characters with personalities, emotions and even moral dilemmas. Today’s fictional robots explore themes such as artificial intelligence, consciousness and the relationship between humans and machines, inspiring generations of engineers and scientists.

Our fascination with robots in fiction stems from their ability to act as mirrors for humanity, exploring what it means to have a soul, confronting our deepest fears of obsolescence, and testing moral boundaries. Fictional works such as Frankenstein highlight our dread of creating something superior that ultimately turns on its maker and in the film I, Robot, we have a moral paradox where rigid rules lead to chaotic and deeply human dilemmas. Robots are featured heavily in fiction because they not only serve as a mirror for humanity but explore what it means to feel, think, and exist. Fiction can allow us safe ways to critique society and address our fears of technology. Robots in fiction span a massive spectrum from terrifying, philosophical threats to goofy, lovable companions.
