Individual Membership

IAP Membership

Who can be a member?

IAP membership is for practising IT professionals with a proven track record. There are five grades of membership; your grade will depend on training, qualifications and experience, which we measure using a unique points system. See also Interim Membership

Student

You need to be enrolled in suitable degree or similar qualification, student membership is valid for your whole time enrolled on a course, including where appropriate work placements. See our Academic Partnership scheme for more details.

You need 250 points, including at least 200 in Analysis and/or Programming combined gained from courses of formal study and examination approved by the Institution. Typically this requirement equates to a relevant honours degree.

Associate Member (AMIAP)

You need 350 points, including at least 200 in Analysis and/or Programming combined. The balance may be made up with further points gained in Analysis, Programming, Business and related disciplines. Typically these requirements mean a relevant honours degree plus a year’s post graduate experience, or four years’ experience.

Member (MIAP)

You need 700 points, including at least 400 points in Analysis and/or Programming combined, and at least 50 points in Business. The balance may be made up with further points gained in Analysis, Programming, Business and related disciplines. Typically these requirements mean a relevant honours degree plus four years’ experience, or eight years’ experience.

Fellow (FIAP)

Outstanding professionals who exceed the requirements for Member by a substantial margin, and who have spent a considerable part of their working life in positions of substantial responsibility, may be considered by the Trustee Board for promotion to the Institution’s most senior grade.

The highest grade that can be applied for and awarded to a member is that of Fellow. The Institution may award a Distinguished Fellowship only at the instigation of the Trustees to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the profession.

The Trustees can exceptionally designate members who have served the Institution in an official capacity for an extended period of time and made an outstanding contribution to its work as a Companion, entitling them to use ‘(Cmpn)’ after their grade. Companionship is an honour and not a grade. It does not reflect competence or experience but extended service and an outstanding contribution to the Institution.
