Are exams worth it?

You may have seen this recent article on the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-30054140. Where a 5 year old boy passed a Microsoft exam and now is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP).

While his skills are not in question, it does raise the issue that without real in the field work experience would you employ him? also or course he might not be able to safely reach the server at the top of the rack.

When Microsoft first brought in the exams; a friend of mine did the 4 exams he needed for MCSD status plus 5 Novell exams in 9 months. He purchased the books, did the study at the rate of 1 a month and did the exam and passed. At no time did he actually do any work based on what he had learnt! In fact when he did start to do work which was based on the subjects he had learnt! he would ring me to ask how to do it!

So while exams show you can read, does working on practical projects (having learnt the base skills) create a better programmer or technician?
